Vision and Mission

Strive to be the most outstanding dragon boat team among universities in Hong Kong:

1.       Promote Water Sports Center in the university and build positive image of our dragon boat team

2.       Enhance Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Dragon Boat team to a higher level and status

3.       Strive to success in Hong Kong and international events

4.       Become a well-disciplined, good and civilized team

5.     Provide a self-challenging platform for training our team spirit and gaining mental and physical benefits

Please send email with your full name, university/staff ID number and contact number to 1hkustdbt@ust.hk and attached the sign-up form (Appendix B), PAR-Q & You form (health questionnaire) (Appendix C) and the signed Disclaimer form (Appendix D).  It is highly recommended for all members to read the (Appendix E) which is the safety reminder for members.  Applicants will be invited to a swimming test, physical test and interview.  

 

Membership Requirements

        Open to HKUST faculty, staff and students.  Target recruitment of students up to 50% of total membership. Others are subject to approval of coaching committee

        To be physically fit and willing to obey discipline and take challenge, and commit to team work

        To adopt and display the high standards of HKUST’s values when representing the University

        To commit to the training schedule and enroll in external competition races

        To be passionate, enthusiastic and respectful to the dragon boat culture

        To pass the basic fitness test (see Appendix A) and routine fitness and technical evaluations

        To be able to swim 100m fully clothed

 

Note:  Students need to pass the swimming proficiency test organized by Student Affairs Office

 

 

Member Types

The best fit 39 members will be selected to be in Team A and entitled to enter all races. Others will be in reserve teams (either Team B or C) depending on resources and opportunities.

 

 

Member Selection

        Coaches set rules for selecting members for overseas or local races. All the members cannot object such selection.

        Coach Committee and chief coach are responsible for the member selection for each race. Selection will be based on member’s interest, training, performance and attendance.  All members cannot object such.

        Selected members will not be classified as Team A, B or C. Coach Committee will decide and announce who will go to which team one month before each race.

        Members need to join the team and be selected one month before any major races. If any members get excellent test result and coach nomination, one can also participate in the selection.

 

Race-day Selection Criteria for Team Members

        Minimum of 50% attendance

        Sufficient level of technique and physical fitness to complete in the race competitively

        Coach’s recommendation

Tentative Training Schedule

(to be confirmed in coordination with Water Sports Center (WSC))

Jan to Feb - Phase 1 (Foundation period):

Two physical training sessions per week at Fok Ying Tong Sports Center, including cardio and muscular foundation training.  Every Tuesday and Thursday from 18:00-19:30.

 

Mar to Mid Apr - Phase 2 (Elementary period):

One technical (Every Sat 9:00-11:00) and one physical training session per week (Every Tue 18:00-19:30)

 

Mid Apr to July - Phase 3 (Race period):

Two technical (Every Tue 18:00-19:30 and Sat 9:00-11:00) and one physical training session per week (Every Thur 18:00-19:30)

 

July to Nov - Phase 4 (Maintenance period):

One technical (Every Sat 9:00-11:00) and one physical training session per week (Every Tue 18:00-19:30)

 

Nov to Dec - Phase 5 (Recovery period):

One physical training session per week (Every Thurs 18:00-19:30)

 

Notes:

1.    Training depends on the progress, weather condition and number of training per week, and can be changed by coaching team.

2.    Routine training evaluation will be conducted at the end of the month by coaching team and supported by Brian Chan, WSC.
